Sherborne Area Five A Side Competition

7th December

The competition at the Sherborne Area Five A Side tournament is always intense. Teams have just six minutes to win their games, they also have to keep the ball below head height and they have to try and use the wall as an extra player!

This year the team played Yetminster in the first round. The way the competition works is that the winner from that game goes forward in the cup competition and the loser moves into the plate half of the tournament.

The Buckland team played some good passing football and ended up winning two nil. This meant that they then faced Sherborne Abbey in the next round, which was also the semi final. Those of you who have been reading the sports reports over the years will know that this is a team that we traditionally come unstuck against. However, this time Buckland Newton took an early lead. A brilliantly taken free kick placed into the bottom right hand corner brought the game level. At full time it was still a draw and so it had to go to penalties. Penalties require the players to kick the ball three quarters of the length of the hall into an empty net. Unfortunately, Sherborne Abbey missed two of their penalties, which left Kieran with the chance to take the team to the final. He kept very calm, and coolly kicked through the middle of the ball. The final was against Sherborne Primary. Both teams played well, but an early goal meant that Buckland Newton were always having to chase the game. However, some brilliant keeping from Sherborne Primary meant that we ended up losing 2-0. which left the Buckland Newton team as very worthy runners up.

Thanks as always to Mr. Howes who organises the tournament and the Gryphon Sport leaders who refereed the games.
