OUR CURRICULUM RATIONALE AND INTENT
At Buckland Newton Primary School, we value each child as an individual with a unique potential for learning. Our aim is to enable each child, regardless of need, to participate fully in current and future society as a responsible, self-confident learner. We believe that an effective curriculum offers knowledge, skills, understanding and progression. At our school, the curriculum is ambitious as it enriches and enlivens the standards set out in the National Curriculum.
How we teach our curriculum
Our school utilises the Cornerstones Scheme to support a cross-curricular approach to the curriculum. It covers all the areas of study in the National Curriculum. We have a two year rolling programme to support mixed age classes. Our planning and teaching of the curriculum is supported by the Cornerstones Approach.
Each topic has a main theme such as Dynamic Dynasties which is a KS2 history based topic looking at Ancient China, or Marvellous Machines a KS1 Design and Technology based learning opportunity. Thematic learning allows children to develop knowledge in a range of curriculum areas and the wisdom to use skills taught in their everyday life.
Learning is differentiated, acknowledging the different ability levels of our students. Each topic also contains challenges which extend the learning and allow the children to apply their knowledge into new areas.
To find out more about our curriculum please speak to the Headteacher who can explain the content, breadth & engagement further.
English, Maths and Science
We follow the National Curriculum for these subjects, with each year group working on the specific learning outcomes for their children. Where possible high quality reading texts and exciting activities are linked to the topics. The curriculum is also supplemented by engaging events such as ‘Art Week’ or ‘Space Week’ or a whole school ‘Science Day’ to enrich and immerse our children in their learning.
Maths is delivered from Reception through to Year 6 using the White Rose Maths Scheme. This provides excellent mathematical progression, developing a deep and wide understanding of mathematical concepts, language and application throughout the school. It is always enhanced by further opportunities at a child centred level to support and extend our pupils’ understanding and attainment. In addition each child has access to online learning programmes to supplement their learning.
English is for everyone. We foster a passion for reading and writing: quality texts are used to inspire and promote the love of reading and writing throughout the school. We recognise that the precise acquisition of language skills forms firm foundations; children leave our school with secure English skills that allow them to thrive and become life-long learners in a multitude of subjects.
Science is enhanced by Cornerstones and a SAST wide development group which provides resources and opportunities to guide our young people to enjoy science and the world around them. This includes engaging visits and visitors whenever possible. Our vision is to ignite and build upon our pupil’s natural curiosity to explore and discover a deeper understanding of the world we live in.
