This term Oak Class have stepped back in time – 30,000 years back in time- as they explore what life was like for the first humans of the British Isles. We will explore the importance of stone to early humans and how tool making developed through the eras, until the Bronze Age and Iron Age brought even greater changes. We will even be taking a school visit to Stone Henge to experience life in the Stone Age for ourselves. In Science we will explore rocks even further by discovering how they are made, how to tell them apart and what properties they are known for. In Geography we delve into the fiery world of volcanoes and discover where to find them and what impact they have on the land around them.
In the Spring term we continue to unravel British history and learn about how the arrival of the Roman army leaves its mark on the face of Britain for millennia to come. We will learn about the history and structure of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire. We will be investigating forces in science where we explore contact and non-contact forces, including friction and magnetism, followed by investigations of frictional and magnetic forces, identifying parts of a magnet and magnetic materials.
Our Summer Term becomes one of fantasy as we use our imaginations to explore fantasy creatures such as dragons and unicorns through a variety of books such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Our science lessons also become fantastical as we explore solids, liquids and gases and their characteristic properties. We will make observations of how materials change state as they are heated and cooled, and learn key terminology associated with these processes.
Our timetabled PE day is on Thursdays which explores Invasion games, Dance and Gymnastics. Children wear their PE kits to school for this day (white PE shirt, blue short or navy tracksuits, white trainers). Forest School begins after the Autumn half Term and takes place on Tuesdays. Forest School kits need to be brought in a separate bag so that the children have something warm and dry to change into afterwards, as we go outside in all weathers. Forest School kits should include: waterproof trousers, coat, hats, wellies or boots and comfortable clothing such as a tracksuit or leggings and a T-shirt. Man-made fibres tend to be better options as they keep the children warm and don’t rub when wet. Please avoid denim. Year 4 children will be swimming for 10 weeks in the Spring Term.
Homework Expectations for Oak Class:
10 minutes reading daily
1 English assignment on Doodle Learning or
1 Maths assignment on Doodle learning (alternating weekly)
Daily Times table Rockstars – Year 4s will have their Multiplication Tests (MTCs) in April.
Please also send a water bottle into school (water only please) and a healthy snack for break times. A coat with a hood and wellies are also ideal as we do go out in all weathers! (A little reminder that toys, games or electronic devices shouldn’t be brought into school.) Messages and news can be sent into school via Class Dojo and we are always happy to take the time to talk about your child’s progress and welfare.
