Welcome to Buckland Newton SEND Support

SEND at Buckland Newton Primary School

SEND provision at Buckland Newton Primary School is led by Mrs Melanie Addinall-Eames (SENCO), who supports children from Pre-School through to Year 7 transition.

At BNPS, we believe that every teacher is a teacher of SEND, and we are proud of our fully inclusive approach. All pupils access mainstream lessons alongside their peers, ensuring they benefit from our knowledge-rich curriculum and high-quality teaching across all subjects.

We are committed to ongoing professional development for all staff, enabling them to meet the diverse needs of learners through effective classroom practice. Our SEND provision is embedded within and complements the curriculum, ensuring that all pupils can access learning through quality-first teaching and inclusive pedagogy.

Where additional support is required, pupils have access to a range of targeted interventions, specialist provision and mentoring opportunities throughout the school day, from 8:30am to 3:15pm.

Our facilities include a dedicated sensory room, providing a calm and supportive space for pupils who need time to regulate their emotions and wellbeing. We also have The Den, a welcoming environment where interventions and additional support sessions take place.

Through these provisions, we strive to ensure that every child feels valued, supported and empowered to achieve their full potential.

Assessment and Monitoring

All pupils are assessed on entry to Buckland Newton Primary School and their progress is monitored regularly throughout their time with us. Assessment information is carefully analysed to ensure that every child is making appropriate progress and achieving their potential.

Where concerns arise regarding a pupil’s progress, more detailed assessments may be undertaken to identify any barriers to learning and determine the most appropriate support. Targeted interventions are then implemented to address specific areas of need, with progress monitored closely to evaluate their effectiveness.

If a pupil continues to experience difficulties despite receiving targeted support, they may be considered for inclusion on the SEND Register. In these cases, further assessment, support and intervention will be provided in line with the graduated approach outlined in the SEND Code of Practice.

The SEND Register is reviewed regularly to ensure that pupils receive the appropriate level of support and are accurately identified at each stage of the SEND process, enabling timely adjustments to provision as needs develop.

Our Stakeholders

Students

We listen carefully to student voice and take into account student’s views when making decisions about our SEND provision.

Parents

Parents are able to contact the SEND team whenever they need to via email or telephone. They are able to make appointments should they wish. In addition to this, the SENDCo is available for appointments at parent consultation evenings.

Staff

At BNPS, all teachers are teachers of SEND. Staff benefit from regular CPD around SEND, offered both internally and externally.

Professionals

BNPS like all schools in Dorset, have a link Educational Psychologist. Once a term, there is a planning meeting between the SENDCo and the Educational Psychologist. This is sometimes attended by Specialist Teachers involved with the school. The purpose of these meetings is to collaboratively look at the Graduated Approach for individual students and decide upon appropriate strategies and next steps, including which professionals should be involved.
